Catalog Description: (Prerequisites: SLP 480-Clinical Methods in Speech- Language Pathology; SLP 481-Clinical Practicum I; and SLP 482-Clinical Practicum II; SLP 483-Clinical Practicum III; and SLP 484-Clinical Practicum IV).

This is a full-time supervised speech-language pathology clinical experience in an early childhood, elementary or secondary public-school setting. Students will acquire experience in individual and/or group therapy, assessment, and consultation. This course consists of a 11-week, full-time school site placement. This course may be taken before or after SLP 486.

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide students within an early childhood, elementary and/or secondary school setting clinical experience, allowing students to apply and refine their skills in assessment, diagnosis, and intervention of children with communication and swallowing disorders. Under the supervision of licensed clinicians, students will work with diverse patient populations across the early childhood, elementary and/or secondary school setting. This course emphasizes evidence-based practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development. Students will be expected to manage complex clinical cases, engage in critical thinking, and demonstrate a high level of clinical competence while adhering to ethical standards and professional guidelines. The practicum will culminate in a comprehensive evaluation at both midterm and final, include a self-assessment, supervisor/clinical educator feedback, and the analysis and presentation of clinical case studies. This course also fulfills partial requirement for the Illinois State Board of Education standards in qualifying for a Professional Educator’s License as a school-based speech-language pathologist in the state of Illinois.
